“General” Tabs in Recycle Bin Properties in All Windows Versions

0
Today in this article, we are going to share another funny and weird bug present in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems. This bug has been shared by our reader "Minecraft Windows".

This bug is related to Recycle Bin which causes Recycle Bin properties window to show a duplicate "General" tab. So you get 2 "General" tabs in Recycle Bin properties window which is quite funny.

To reproduce and enjoy this bug, do as following:

STEP 1:

First of all, you'll need to enable options to show hidden files and folders and protected operating system files using Folder Options.

Folder Options can be accessed using File Explorer (also known as Windows Explorer, My Computer and This PC). If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10, you need to click on "View" tab in the ribbon and then click on "Options" button present at the end of the toolbar. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, you need to click on "Organize" menu present in the command bar. You can also press ALT key to temporary show Menu bar and then click on "Tools -> Folder Options" menu.

Alternatively, you can direct open Folder Options using following commands in RUN dialog box:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Options_RunDLL 0
control folders
Once you open Folder Options, go to "View" tab and do as following:
  • Select i.e. enable "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" option
  • Uncheck i.e. disable "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option
  •

Click on Apply button and then OK button to save changes.

STEP 2:

Now open File Explorer (or This PC, My Computer) and go to C: drive. You'll see "$Recycle.Bin" folder which is a hidden and system folder. Double-click on it and then again double-click on "Recycle Bin" folder which shows actual Recycle Bin icon.

STEP 3:
Now the final step to reveal the bug. Right-click on empty area and select "Properties" option from the context menu.

That's it. You have successfully revealed the bug. The properties window will show 2 "General" tabs as shown in following screenshot:

One "General" tab shows general folder properties like name, type, location, size, date, attributes, etc.
The other "General" tab shows real Recycle Bin settings such as custom size, option to show/hide delete confirmation dialog box, etc.

As far as I understand, the duplicate "General" tabs are shown because Windows is mixing Recycle Bin folder properties with the real Recycle Bin properties. That's why it's taking one "General" tab from folder properties and the other "General" tab from real Recycle Bin properties.
Anyway Windows should be able to find out the difference between both Recycle Bins and should not mix their properties windows. Having 2 tabs with same name in a single properties window is not correct.
