If you are trying to add new email account to Windows 10 built-in Mail app and are getting "Something went wrong, error code: 0x80004005 or error code: 0x80190001" error message while setting up your account, this tutorial will help you in fixing this issue and adding your email account to Mail app without any problem.Windows 10 comes with a built-in Mail app to allow users accessing their email accounts. Users can add their email accounts and can check emails using this app. Mail app provides very clean and minimal UI and supports almost all popular email service providers and protocols.
Yesterday I decided to try the Mail app in one of my Windows 10 machines. I launched Mail app and it asked me to add new email account before using the app. I clicked on "Add account" button. Then it showed setup screen to select email account provider such as Outlook.com, Exchange, Google, Yahoo!, iCloud, etc.
PROBLEM 1 and SOLUTION:
I selected my email service provider and immediately got following error message:
Something went wrong
Please try again later.
0x80190001
I solved this error message by whitelisting following 3 executables/services required by Mail app. My Firewall software blocked these executables/services from accessing Internet:
- Microsoft WWA Host (C:\windows\system32\wwahost.exe)
- Microsoft Outlook Communications (C:\program files\windowsapps\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps..\hxtsr.exe)
- Microsoft Outlook (C:\program files\windowsapps\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps..\hxoutlook.exe)
PROBLEM 2 and SOLUTION:
Now Mail app asked to enter credentials of my email account. As soon as I entered my email account ID and password, Mail app showed following error message:
Something went wrong
We're sorry, but we weren't able to do that.
Error code: 0x80004005.
I double-checked my Firewall software and no executable/service was blocked this time. I also tried to disable the Firewall but it didn't fix the error message.
I tried several troubleshooting methods but none of them worked and finally I was able to solve the issue by modifying some Privacy settings in Windows 10 Settings app.
Actually when I installed Windows 10 in my computer, I turned off all app permissions in Settings -> Privacy page to improve privacy. It caused this error message problem in Mail app because Mail app required some permissions such as accessing mail, calendar, contacts. When I enabled those permissions, I was able to get rid of the annoying error message in Mail app.
If you are also getting the above mentioned "Something went wrong" error message while adding and setting up your email account in Mail app in Windows 10 operating system, following simple steps
will help you in fixing the issue:
1. Open Settings app from Start Menu or by pressing WIN+I keys together.
2. Now click on "Privacy" section.
PS: Alternatively, You can directly launch this page using "ms-settings:privacy" command in RUN dialog box as mentioned here.
3. Now under "App permissions" section in left-sidebar, click on Email tab.
In right-side pane, make sure "Email access for this device is on" message is showing under "Allow access to email on this device" section. If you see "Email access for this device is off" message, click on Change button and set the toggle button to ON.
Now make sure "Allow apps to access your email" option is also enabled i.e. set to ON.
Also make sure "Mail and Calendar" app is enabled under "Choose which apps can access your email" section.
4. Repeat same steps given in STEP 3 for Calendar and Contacts tabs as well.
That's it. Now relaunch Mail app and you'll not receive any error message or error code this time. You'll be able to setup and add your email account successfully without any problem.
